"Every Child Matters": Change for Parents/Carers and Families? Can Schools Work with Families to Promote Knowledge and Understanding of Government Expectations?

The "Every Child Matters" agenda places emphasis on the need for parents/carers and families to work in partnership with schools. At the heart of this is the importance of a shared definition of family learning that values parents as equal partners. The extent to which schools are responsible for putting government policy into practice can contradict with the rhetoric of parental choice. The article recognizes that this is a complex area of debate and that individual schools need to examine the extent to which partnership is facilitated to achieve the five outcomes.
