Toward Better Mentoring for Early Career Faculty: Results of a Study of US Geographers
Foote, Kenneth E.; Solem, Michael N.
International Journal for Academic Development, v14 n1 p47-58 Mar 2009
Interviews and a survey were conducted to assess both the structure and content of mentoring and advising provided to early-career faculty in geography. Results indicated three broad conditions for structuring effective mentoring: (1) regular, proactive meetings; (2) engaging diverse groups of individuals within and outside of a department; and (3) leadership, resources, and philosophical support for professional development from departments and institutions. Within mentoring relationships, early career faculty would like a broader range of professional and career issues addressed. Although drawn from one discipline, the data suggest ways of improving mentoring practice in other fields. (Contains 3 tables.)
