Building Families: Diverse Pathways to Parenthood
Rosenblum, Katherine L.; Olshansky, Ellen
Zero to Three, v27 n5 p16-22 May 2007
Due to advances in reproductive technology and more progressive adoption laws, prospective parents now have many more choices and opportunities for how they form their families. This article explores the experiences of adoption, gay and lesbian families, and assisted reproductive technology to illustrate the concept that there are many legitimate ways to create a family. Understanding each family's own unique history and culture allows professionals to work more effectively to support healthy child development and family functioning and to reduce the lingering stigma that biological families are more "real" than those created through adoption or reproductive technology.
