Joy When the Job's a Perfect Fit
Ghezzi, Patti
School Administrator, v65 n11 p10-12 Dec 2008
The superintendency has a reputation as a thankless occupation, one so difficult search firms sometimes have a hard time drumming up applicants for challenging school districts. It is not hard to see why many educators say they would never aspire to the top post: more intense news media scrutiny, harsh and incessant community bloggers, constricting federal mandates, unpredictable local board politics and decreasing opportunities for direct contact with students and hands-on involvement in instructional matters. It is a 24-hour job with expectations that often seem unreasonable; yet for all the stress, the bad headlines and the aggravation, superintendents on the whole are upbeat about what they do for a living. This article shares the stories of some superintendents who describe what satisfies them most.
