Restructuring the Secondary Physical Education Curriculum to Meet New Challenges
Beyer, Robbi
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v79 n9 p27-32 Nov-Dec 2008
Educators face a major challenge in providing programs that make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of their students. It is important for students to gain a degree of knowledge and confidence that will lead them to maintain an active lifestyle well beyond their school years. The purpose of this article is to describe strategies for successfully restructuring, realigning, and delivering an innovative secondary physical education curriculum. The proposed process is outlined in five steps and includes a synopsis of "The Move to Live, Live to Move" project. This project is currently being implemented in 26 secondary schools in a large South Texas school district. Many of the concepts that originated during the development of this project can be implemented to facilitate the delivery of a comprehensive and contemporary mobile curriculum for secondary physical education in other districts. This article includes examples of mobile learning modules and describes processes and tools for restructuring a program by identifying students' needs and capitalizing on the existing faculty talents and resources within the district and community.
