Pence, Gregory
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n18 pB20 Jan 2009
Today's young academics need to lower their expectations, especially in light of the country's current economic woes. But judging from the author's experience, that mental adjustment could lead to rich opportunities. In this article, the author relates his struggle to establish a career in philosophy and provides his thoughts on the necessary elements for happiness in academe: (1) Secure a tenure-track job; (2) Teach students who want to learn; (3) Publish about things one cares care about; and (4) Be a good academic citizen through service to one's institution and field.
