Developing Critical Audiences in Dance Education. Perspectives
Redfern, Betty
Research in Dance Education, v4 n2 p185-197 Dec 2003
The purpose of the "Perspectives" section of "Research in Dance Education" is to make available valuable material relating to dance education that is out of print and, therefore, difficult to obtain. In this issue's "Perspectives" contribution, the author raises issues that are significant for dance education and possibly as relevant today as they were in the 1970s. The philosophical examination of dance as part of the curriculum in schools and universities was part of an increasingly rigorous attempt to conceptualise dance as an element of an education in the arts. The author requires that her audience reconsider the concept of dance education and argues that critical appreciation is a vital element of the task of education. (Contains 17 notes.) [This paper represents a slightly extended version of the paper given at the Dance Section of the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education Christmas Conference, 1975.]
