Creative Leadership Teams: Capacity Building and Succession Planning

Creative leadership is an imaginative and thought-through response to the opportunities and challenging issues that inhibit learning at all levels. It's about seeing, thinking and doing things differently in order to improve the life chances of all students. Creative leaders also provide the conditions, environment and opportunities for others to be creative. This was the authors' conclusion at the close of Creative Leadership Learning, a research and development project conducted from September 2006 until February 2008, in which the authors explored with 11 school leadership teams (nine primary and two secondary) in South Gloucestershire in the South West of England some approaches to and consequences of creative leadership. Their findings are based on baseline, mid-project and final interviews, surveys, participants' reflections, notes they took during sessions and evaluation activities in the final session. This article presents the answers to the research questions such as: (1) Why do educators need creative leadership teams? and (2) How does a group of individuals become a creative leadership team?
