School/University Collaboration: The Power of Transformative Partnerships
Teitel, Lee
Childhood Education, v85 n2 p75 Win 2008
In this article, the author talks about professional development schools (PDSs), a form of collaboration between schools and universities that have tremendous potential to improve both, and discusses four joint tasks of PDSs, namely (1) improvement of student learning; (2) preparation of educators; (3) professional development of educators; and (4) research and inquiry into improving practice. Schools and universities (especially the teacher-preparation side of universities) are collaborators in what is arguably the most critical goal in the United States--the education of its children. Here, the author draws on the experience of PDSs to explore the challenges, potentials, and pitfalls of developing truly transformative partnerships between schools and universities. First, he describes the continuum on which "transformative" and "transactional" partnerships sit, using examples from PDSs to illustrate the differences. Next, he discusses the challenges of getting to and staying in transformative relationships. He concludes with some simple assessments and activities that current or potential partners can use to improve the transformative nature of their collaborations. (Contains 2 notes.)
