The introductory differential equations course can be made more relevant to engineering students by including more of the engineering viewpoint, in which differential equations are regarded as systems with inputs and outputs. This can be done without sacrificing any of the usual topical coverage. This point of view is conducive to student exploration, which can be facilitated by software tools such as those available at http://dynsys.uml.edu/. (Contains 4 figures.)
