Music Software and Young Children: Fun and Focused Instruction
Peters, G. David
General Music Today, v22 n2 p37-39 2009
Readers have experienced the acceleration in music technology developments in recent years. The ease with which students and teacher can access digital audio files, video clips of music performances, and online instructional resources is impressive. Creativity "environments" were developed in a game-like format for children to experiment with sounds, assemble melodies, and save their favorite pieces. The most recent series of creativity music software is Groovy Music by Sibelius. The Groovy Music series consists of three separate software products: (1) Groovy Shapes (ages 5 and older); (2) Groovy Jungle (ages 7 and older); and (3) Groovy City (ages 9 and older). Each product is based on similar concepts of shapes and characters. Groovy Music presents the basics of sound, rhythm, pitch, and composition using pictures and animation, progressing to the study of simple notation. This article describes Groovy Shapes which is age appropriate for young children and focuses on shapes to represent music elements of rhythm, melody, and chords. The shapes and animals represent elements of music. The program offers two sections, Explore and Create, which reflect some of the ideas found in the Make Music software of Martin Subotnik.
