Early Favorite in Academe Wins Handily
Hebel, Sara
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n12 pA1 Nov 2008
Among the many groups of Barack Obama's supporters who considered him one of their own, and helped propel him into the presidency, were large numbers of the nation's college professors, administrators, and students. The president-elect won overwhelming support from academe throughout the campaign. The Obama campaign aggressively courted student supporters, including through online networking sites, like Facebook, and by building grass-roots support networks on campuses across the country. In a poll of nearly 25,000 undergraduates at four-year colleges conducted by CBS News, UWIRE, and "The Chronicle" in four battleground states, 78 percent of respondents who were registered to vote thought that Obama cared about people like them, and about two-thirds said he was someone they could relate to.
