Building a United Front: How Classroom Teachers and Private Instructors Can Work Together
Randall, Mac
Teaching Music, v16 n3 p38 Nov 2008
When a classroom teacher and a private instructor work together to help students learn, the results are usually inspiring. But sadly, this is far from the norm. Much more often, school music teachers have no idea what their students' private instructors are doing, and vice versa, and establishing a means of communication between the two parties is not always easy. In this article, the author discusses how classroom teachers and private instructors can work together to help students learn. He shares a true story of a percussion instructor and a private teacher who collaborated with each other to create a meaningful experience for students. He also discusses how professional organizations could do more to help create a united front for music education.
