A Plan of Action: When Student Teachers and Cooperating Teachers Are on the Same Page, Everyone Benefits
Tranberg, Christopher
Teaching Music, v16 n3 p26 Nov 2008
The prospect of sharing students with a student teacher comes with different levels of anxiety for practicing music educators. For some, the idea is an exciting challenge that compels the practicing teacher to be at his or her best in order to provide the student teacher with an outstanding experience. For others, the idea of sharing their students causes fear and tension and becomes an overwhelming challenge. For the students, cooperating teacher, and student teacher to have a positive experience, it is essential that there be a plan in place for welcoming the student teacher to the placement school and clearly defining everyone's responsibilities during the placement. In this article, the author provides an action plan for music educators that describes how to cooperate with student teachers and help them prepare for their own classroom in just a few months. The author recommends an interview with a student teacher before the first day of the experience and presents a set of student teacher interview questions. He stresses the importance of observation and suggests that student teachers observe not only the model teacher, but also the classroom setup and the students' behaviors and responses.
