Blogging in the Library
Gustafson, Chris
Library Media Connection, v27 n3 p56-57 Nov-Dec 2008
There are plenty of reasons why teaching students to set up their own blogs should not be taught by school librarians. But the truth is, not all students have access to that out-of-school technology world. ELL students and kids from lower-income homes are unlikely to have the Internet at home. As much as school librarians promote and encourage students to make use of the city's excellent network of neighborhood libraries outside of school time, most are unable to overcome barriers of language, unfamiliarity, or the need for transportation. They have no way to learn about or use blogs. By forbidding blogs in schools, one is sending the message that they have no educational value and is also passing up the opportunity to teach students how to use these and future social networking tools in a responsible manner when they're not in school. In this article, the author describes how to get blogging started in schools.
