Immersing the Library in English Language Learning

The author relates how his school has a very active English Language Learner (ELL) program. ELL students typically have varying levels of social and academic language, but almost always have some English proficiency. Recently, his school established a Newcomer Program that drastically changed the school system. They acquired students lacking any English skills and experiencing no previous schooling. In this article, the author shares his experiences in assisting the Somali Bantus of his school's Newcomer Program. He describes how his school library found an effective way in serving its Bantu population.
