Mathematics and Poetry: The Right Connection
Whitin, David; Piwko, Michelle
Young Children, v63 n2 p34-39 Mar 2008
Reading, writing, and mathematics are best learned by children in meaningful, integrated experiences. In an engaging project combining math and literacy, primary children in Michelle Piwko's classroom followed the framework of verses from a classic children's book to structure their own writing about geometric forms. They brainstormed geometric attributes, interviewed their families about geometric shapes, and organized, wrote about, and illustrated their information. The authors describe individual children's processes and projects in constructing their math poems. The article features the children's illustrations. A sidebar lists teaching strategies. This article is available online, with a bibliography of poems with math themes, in Beyond the Journal, March 2008, at
