Cultural Competency
Paz, Stan
School Administrator, v65 n10 p36-39 Nov 2008
In today's era of accountability, test scores are top-in-mind for educators. Educators must do all they can to help English language learners succeed in literacy, math, science, and so much more. However, education is not just about the brain; it's about the whole child. In this article, the author describes how school district leaders can set the tone for a positive school community that embraces diversity and nurtures the hearts and minds of students from all backgrounds. The author also discusses five essential elements that contribute to becoming more culturally competent: (1) Value diversity; (2) Build the capacity for cultural self-assessment; (3) Be conscious of the dynamics inherent when cultures interact; (4) Institutionalize cultural knowledge; and (5) Adapt service delivery to reflect an understanding of diversity among and within cultures.
