Transposition Musical Chairs
Yankosky, Bill
PRIMUS, v18 n6 p563-569 Nov 2008
This article discusses a classroom activity in which students in a small-sized (n = 4) Abstract Algebra class were able to discover some properties related to permutations and transpositions by physically moving from chair to chair according to suggested guidelines. During the lesson students were able to determine ways to write a permutation as a product of transpositions and a way to use transpositions to find the inverse of a permutation. An outline of the lesson is given as well as a discussion of how students responded to the activity. We also discuss possible future variations and adaptations to larger class sizes.
