Let's Eliminate the Eighth Grade!
Ogden, William R.
Education, v129 n1 p91-94 Fall 2008
With tongue tentatively hovering in the direction of the distal side of the tooth line and the lining of the inner cheek, the author suggests terminating the elementary school years with the seventh grade and requiring completion of nine to twelve months of paid work experience before the resumption of high school. Maintaining that a practical understanding of work based upon knowledge gained through actual experience will provide a more realistic understanding of career decisions and will result in a more focused, valuable and productive outlook with respect to the high school course of study, the author believes elimination of the eighth grade will also be beneficial for developmental, social and disciplinary reasons.
