Rising to the Challenge: Developing a Survey of Workplace Skills, Civic Engagement, and Global Awareness
Ouimet, Judith A.; Pike, Gary R.
New Directions for Institutional Research, nS1 p71-82 Fall 2008
This chapter describes the ongoing development of a survey of students' workplace skills, civic engagement, and global awareness that colleges and universities can use to document their contributions to the public good. The student growth survey currently under development offers colleges and universities an opportunity to refocus the attention of federal, state, and local officials on some of the important public benefits of higher education: helping to provide a well-educated workforce, increased civic engagement and responsible citizenship, and a heightened awareness of global issues and opportunities. The survey may also prove invaluable to colleges and universities struggling to demonstrate to accrediting associations that students actually learn what college mission statements claim they do.
