The Power of Partnership
Baxter, Barbara
Community College Journal, v79 n2 p10-13 Oct-Nov 2008
For generations the Arkansas Delta has been a region of poverty, low academic achievement, and low workforce skills. Representing nine counties in the region, four community colleges and a university 300 miles away have joined together to form the Arkansas Delta Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Project (ADSTEP). The consortium includes Arkansas Northeastern College (ANC), East Arkansas Community College (EACC), Mid-South Community College (MSCC), Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA), and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith (UA Fort Smith). Supported by a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), ADSTEP aims to demonstrate how community colleges, in partnership with a university and local school districts, can provide a systemic solution to the historic underrepresentation of minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This article describes the goals of the project.
