What can a family, a school, or even a community do to re-engage students who have fallen by the wayside and thus become part of an unproductive, uninspired, and burden-heavy generation? One option, described in this article, is a Star Academy, comprised of several parts that cohesively function as a whole. To enable this synergy of education and learning, a series of innovative curriculum and instructional strategies were developed. The author focuses on the Olympia Learning Center (OLC) STAR academy in Columbia, South Carolina. When students enter the OLC STAR Academy, staff members use a Results-Based Conversation (RBC) protocol to revive the spirit of success. Parent and community involvement in the education process is re-established. Students are constantly encouraged to want to experience success again. The interactive, hands-on curriculum engages students and connects the relevance of each subject to everyday, practical situations. Students finally understand how math, science, English and social studies are all connected. The academy provides the tools and opportunities for students to become the powerful and successful youth that they always had the potential to be.
