Reimagine Learning: Building a District on Arts Education
Penning, Dia
Teaching Artist Journal, v6 n4 p279-289 Oct 2008
Three years ago the city, county, and school district of San Francisco was determined to provide daily sequential arts learning to all its public school students. Through his support of arts education, Superintendent Carlos Garcia is creating a model for an equitable, high-quality, and relevant education for public school students. In this article, the author describes how a progressive superintendent puts arts education at the center of school reform in San Francisco. The author provides support to make this district initiative a reality, while concurrently observing and chronicling the challenges and successes. The author's observations lead her to suggest that San Francisco is poised to become a model for rebuilding a school district with arts learning at its core. (Contains 2 notes.)
