Separation Anxiety: An in-Class Game Designed to Help Students Discover Chromatography

An in-class activity has been developed to assist students in discovering chromatographic separations. Designed on the basis of plate theory, the game has students use instructor-provided partition coefficients to establish equilibrium for two different items between a stationary and mobile phase. As students work through equilibration and mobile phase movement, the two items undergo separation. The data collected is plotted and used for further classroom discussion of topics related to chromatographic separations. Owing to the simple nature of moving items between two boxes, this exercise can be implemented in high school classrooms through advanced undergraduate programs. (Contains 2 tables and 2 figures.)
