Foreign Language Education in Sweden from a Historical Perspective: Status, Role and Organization

The main objective of this article is to analyse the place of foreign language education in the development of the Swedish education system that spans a period of over four centuries. Primary sources, i.e. school decrees, ordinances, teaching programmes as well as reports by government commissions form the initial reference framework for this research, which is then supplemented by various studies on foreign language education and the school system in Sweden. After a presentation of how the Swedish school system has developed throughout the centuries, the article discusses the status and organization of language teaching. It then focuses on the three languages that have traditionally been taught, i.e. German, French and English, before giving an overview of the present-day situation. (Contains 3 tables and 56 notes.)
