Humanities Professors Match "Green" Efforts of Colleges in Class
Grasgreen, Allie
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n5 pA11 Sep 2008
In response to the threat of global climate change, more than 550 campus leaders have signed the Presidents Climate Commitment, pledging their colleges to become carbon-neutral. But some educators worry that colleges are fulfilling only half of their environmental duties. The other half, of course, should take place in the classroom, where students could absorb knowledge to combat, and perhaps deter, an environmental crisis. A handful of colleges are seeking to solve this problem with creative programs and courses that combine environmental sciences with the humanities--bridging the much-discussed divide between the sciences and the arts. This article describes why some administrators and faculty members hesitate to create interdisciplinary approaches to the study of sustainability.
