The Treaty on Environmental Education for Sustainable Societies and Global Responsibility is devoted to protecting life on earth and it recognises the central role of education in shaping values and social action. The signatories of the Treaty commit themselves to a process of educational transformation aimed at involving themselves, their communities and nations in creating equitable and sustainable societies. This article describes: (1) Some principles of environmental education for equitable and sustainable societies; (2) The plan of action of the Treaty's signatories; (3) Co-ordination, monitoring and evaluation systems implemented by the Treaty; (4) The groups that the Treaty aims to reach; and (5) The resources that the signatories commit to allocate for the Treaty.
