They Knew Calculus when They Left: The Thinking Disconnect between High School and University
St. Jarre, Kevin
Phi Delta Kappan, v90 n2 p123-126 Oct 2008
High school teachers and administrators are often shocked to learn that universities consider their graduates unprepared for college work. They're especially chagrined when their most successful students seem ill prepared for college work. Author Kevin St. Jarre proposes that secondary schools spend more effort on ensuring that students know how to learn and think and less time on training them to imitate and perform in exchange for grades.
