Learning from Looking at Student Work
Baron, Daniel
Principal Leadership, v9 n1 p66-68 Sep 2008
Most teachers spend more time "looking" at student work outside of class than anything else they do. As a teacher, the author relates spending many evenings and weekends visually scanning the work of his students. Although he knew that the students' effort deserved his careful attention, the volume of homework, essays, tests, and research papers was so great that he was barely able to complete grading done from one assignment to the next. The author relates that he changed the way he "looked" at his students' work after he joined The National School Reform Faculty (NSRF) and the Looking at Student Work Collaboration (LASWC). In this article, he shares a set of principles that will guide teachers in grading students' work.
