An Analysis of the National TYCA Research Initiative Survey, Section II: Assessment Practices in Two-Year College English Programs
Sullivan, Patrick
Teaching English in the Two-Year College, v36 n1 p7-26 Sep 2008
In 2005, supported by a CCCC's Research Initiative Grant and TYCA volunteers, the TYCA Research Initiative Committee distributed the first national survey of two-year college writing programs. This online survey explored two-year college programs and satisfaction within four areas identified in the CCCC grant proposal: (1) Assessment; (2) Technology and Pedagogy; (3) WAC/WID; and (4) Teaching Conditions. Their goals were to identify shared challenges and effective practices in these key areas, suggest potential areas for research, and provide a foundation for advocacy on the local, state, and national levels. The survey offered seventy-four closed and open-ended questions. To ensure a significant number of responses, TYCA National distributed the survey to all of its members, TYCA Regional Committees contacted colleges in their regions, and the TYCA Research Committee Chair and her assistant contacted colleges in low-response areas. If a college submitted two responses, only the earlier response was included in the survey count. This analysis of the Assessment Practices section of the national TYCA survey of writing programs examines recent trends in placement and exit practices at the two-year college.
