Voluntary Teacher Leadership: Key to Sustainable Improvement
Hickman, Wayne A.; Moore, Lynda C.; Torek, Tonya J.
Principal Leadership, v9 n2 p30-33 Oct 2008
When the Burke County Board of Education mandated Burke County High School in Waynesboro, Georgia to "seek a solution" to its poor graduation rate--specifically, to change the school's schedule, teachers were given the responsibility and authority to plan and facilitate the transition. The transition process taught teachers and administrators that when teachers become voluntary leaders and have the authority to make important decisions, sustainable success is within reach. In this article, the authors share Burke County High School's teacher empowerment story from both the principal and teacher's perspective. The authors emphasize that the most important thing that any principal can do to encourage the spirit of empowerment throughout the school is to practice servant leadership.
