Visions for Future Schooling: An Essay on Promising Possibilities

As educators actively engaged in various aspects of public education in Texas and other states and countries for half of the 20th century, the authors have been both supporters and critics of US schools. In the process of observing and actively working with public school leaders, their critical concerns have steadily grown from an emphasis on school improvement, to leadership for change, to fundamental restructuring. The need for change is widely recognized, but visions of the future are largely lacking. Clear visions, widely recognized as worthy, directly related to the needs of children and youth and responsive to societal needs now and in the future, must be formulated to guide fundamental restructuring of schooling. The known art and science of educational practice must be recognized and utilized in charting the best possible future for schools. Here, the authors outline such a possible future. They enumerate basic policy provisions that indicate the guiding principles for all planning for change, and offer nine priority goals for change. (Contains 1 note.)
