How can everyone celebrate the most powerful dream (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s) in America's history, which paved the way for civil rights, equality, and social justice? How can everyone heighten students' awareness of these civil and social issues? An increased use of African-American literature is one effective way. In this article, multifaceted uses of African-American literature are discussed as ways to address civil and social issues with K-6 students. Through such literature, students are engaged in considering resistance to racism and inequality, means of heightening recognition of history, customs, and achievements, and self-affirmation. The evolution of African-American characters in literature is highlighted. Inspirational works of African-American authors and illustrators are profiled. Identified strategies to celebrate the dream are supported with a bibliography of African-American books for children.
