Effective Management of Information Security and Privacy
Anderson, Alicia
EDUCAUSE Quarterly, v29 n1 p15-20 2006
No university seems immune to cyber attacks. For many universities, such events have served as wake-up calls to develop a comprehensive information security and privacy strategy. This is no simple task, however. It involves balancing a culture of openness with a need for security and privacy. Security and privacy are not the same, and the traditional functions of IT, human resources, and campus security do not adequately address the privacy issues arising on today's college campuses. Security receives organizational attention and funding, while privacy is largely neglected or assumed to be handled by existing security mechanisms. Institutions of higher education are naturally vulnerable to both security leaks and privacy violations because of their culture of openness. Technology has enabled sophisticated capabilities for sharing information, but with attendant complexity and difficulty in protecting that information. Additionally, manual processes and practices persist, potentially leading to the compromise of sensitive information. The author suggests that universities need new approaches to both privacy and security issues to successfully protect the personal information of their communities. She offers ways on how universities can handle information security and privacy effectively. (Contains 1 figure and 5 endnotes.)
