Grow Your Own Leaders
Lindsay, Sandra R.
School Administrator, v65 n7 p20-23 Aug 2008
It's a familiar scenario: Too few quality administrators are ready to fill vacancies created by growth, retirement or the stress of high-stakes leadership. A consortium of school districts in South Carolina acted jointly on their predicament to create a pipeline that promises to maintain an ongoing flow of solid candidates. In this article, the author describes the development of the Leadership Pipeline Initiative, a partnership between the College of Education at the University of South Carolina and local school districts. The agreement is to prepare school leaders in cohorts of 25 selected participants. The results are noteworthy, and the author relates that the strategies they employed for the initiative were equivalent to that of her father-in-law's successful gardening techniques.
