Using Enquiry to Deliver Change: The NCSL Research Associate Programme
Coles, Martin
Management in Education, v18 n2 p11-13 2004
The National College for School Leadership (NCSL) has been created to support and develop England's 25,000 headteachers, as well as the thousands of teachers and others with leadership roles and aspirations in schools. The NCSL has an extraordinarily ambitious goal: every child in a well-led school and every leader a learner. In order to achieve this goal, the college has to help current and future school leaders, individuals and teams, develop the skills, the capability and the capacity to lead and transform the school education system into the best it can be. As part of this task the research group within the college is working to find, analyse, describe and celebrate great practice in school leadership in order to build a useable knowledge base for school leaders to share. In an effort to improve the understanding of school leadership, to give practitioner enquiry status and to close the gap between theory and practice, the college has instituted a research associates programme. In this article, the author talks about the NCSL research associate programme which models the college's commitment to the integration of action and research and the evidence-basing of practice.
