The First Days of the Principalship: A Time of Discovery
Holloman, Hal L.
Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership, v9 n1 p12-24 2006
The intense experiences that fill a principal's school day often create blind spots in which one cannot see the greater opportunities for discovery. In fact, these daily challenges of the principalship can lead to very reactive measures and sometimes tunnel vision. The purpose of this case is to help future educational administrators recognize the importance of knowing that the challenges will come and knowing that the school culture itself can provide tremendous insight into leading positive change efforts. In this case, students are provided empirical data from various sources (i.e., test data, specific faculty information, school climate survey results) and additional observational data (i.e., conversations with stakeholders). These data will be used to address and evaluate issues pertaining to the school district's culture and the need for organizational change at Eastside School. Students are asked to analyze all of the information in light of needed reforms and determine appropriate responses. In addition, students will be challenged to recognize clear opportunities when the principal's vision and beliefs should be communicated to the various players within the case--all in an effort to influence positive change efforts at Eastside.
