Learning to Listen to the Visitor
Uzelmeier, Calvin
Journal of Museum Education, v31 n3 p207-214 Fall 2006
Museum educators enter the field from a variety of backgrounds, not all rooted in visitor studies. In this article, the author discusses his experiences making the transition from university academics to the science center arena, and his struggles to define his role as an educator. A turning point for this search was his collaboration with exhibit staff in the development of interactives. Through this partnership, exhibit and education staff learned from each other's strengths and found the visitor's voice to be the mutual third party that guided their work. By listening to the visitor, the author was able to better understand his role in education and his relevancy to the institution. (Contains 2 notes.)
