Building Self Awareness: Valuing Ourselves and Our Roles as Models in Children's Lives
Humphryes, Janet; Wolfson, Stone
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n182 p46-50 Jul-Aug 2008
There is an unspoken myth in the field of early care and education: the people in the field are needed to nurture children and keep on giving without needing anything in return--ever. Such a myth has contributed to the burnout of so many potentials. If adults do not refuel, renew, take care of themselves, they cannot expect to do anything but hinder the lives of children entrusted to their care, and perhaps even burden them with their own personal challenges. Adults want to have positive relationships with children, and thus they need to nurture that positive relationship with themselves first. This article offers several exercises that will help adults increase their awareness, ability, responsiveness, and aliveness.
