Storybook Soldiers
Stanistreet, Paul
Adults Learning, v19 n4 p24-26 Dec 2007
The separation from family endured by Army personnel during operations can be tough. No parent wants to be away from their children for long periods--or miss out on crucial moments in their development. For the children themselves, the pain of separation is often compounded by a lack of understanding as to why Mummy or Daddy is no longer there. That is why the Army is supporting a project that lets the children of Forces personnel hear their absent parent's voice, at their bedsides, each evening. The Storybook Soldiers project gives parents the chance to record a bedtime story for their children, usually just prior to deployment, but increasingly, as the project has expanded, from conflict zones around the world. From small beginnings in January 2007 the project has helped more than 100 service people maintain contact with family during operations. Sustained by the voluntary efforts of staff and families, it is making a huge positive difference to children and parents alike.
