Let Me Tell You a Story
Parkinson, Deirdre
Adults Learning, v19 n2 p18-20 Oct 2007
HMP Cornton Vale is Scotland's only female prison. Based in Stirlingshire, it accommodates adults and young women, both sentenced and untried. Most sentenced prisoners are short-term prisoners with sentences of between two and four years. Cornton Vale offers a range of formal and non-formal activities for the women, some educational, others recreational, including: induction modules, delivered mainly by prison staff; classes in IT, creative writing, maths, numeracy and communications, provided by Lauder College, which take place in the Learning Centre; and non-formal activities, often delivered by prison staff or in partnership with voluntary organisations. Non-formal activities are diverse and have included an annual pantomime; the design and development of a landscaped garden; and two storytelling workshops. The prison has also delivered an innovative peer-tutoring training course for prisoners, which has led to several women becoming qualified adult literacy tutors. One of the major themes of learning at Cornton Vale is relationships, an important aspect of which is maintaining family connections. This article describes the Storybook Mums Project which has been developed at Cornton Vale. The project is based on "Storybook Dads," which is based at Dartmoor Prison in England. "Storybook Mums" uses digital technology to record prisoners telling a story for their children. The project aims to maintain family ties and facilitate learning for prisoners and their children.
