This article talks about Cal State Fullerton Special Games--Kathleen E. Faley Memorial, an annual event for individuals with disabilities at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) on the first Friday of May. One of the founders, Kathleen Faley, is one of Jack Faley's daughters. For Jack Faley, the Special Games are more than just an event for those with disabilities. He said, "Special Games is about helping the community and about family. But it's also about the volunteers and the community participation." Each year students who have cognitive and physical challenges are paired up with high school and college student volunteers to participate in non-competitive games that include track and field events along with a ring toss, basketball hoops, and football throw. Paul Miller, the director of Disabled Student Services at CSUF, explained how the Special Games differed from Special Olympics. The Special Games are non-competitive in contrast to Special Olympics. In fact, almost 80 percent of the CSUF event participants could not qualify for Special Olympics. This community has grown over the years. Over 6,000 volunteers and athletes participated in this May's annual event, which has grown in size every year since its inception. This number is a far cry from what the organizers had expected the games would reach when they were created.
