Fiction Is Truth, and Sometimes Truth Is Fiction
Hess, Carol Lakey
Religious Education, v103 n3 p280-285 May-Jun 2008
The art of fiction tells truth because it is the truth of life that goes into making good fiction: love, hate, fear, courage, delight, sorrow, betrayal, loyalty, confusion, choice, circumstance, luck, injustice. These essential qualities, says the author, are also the qualities of sound theology, with a sense of time and place; and raising relevant questions without offering absolute answers. The author cites her reaction to the central character of John Updike's "In the Beauty of the Lilies." (Contains 2 footnotes.)
