The Table: Christian Education as Performative Art
Smith, Yolanda Y.
Religious Education, v103 n3 p301-305 May 2008
Creative engagement is a vital component of the courses the author teaches. Along with a critical reading of the required texts and other related sources, she encourages students to share from their personal experiences as well as from their faith tradition, cultural heritage, family background, and even their favorite music, literature, poetry, dance, and various forms of artistic expression. By offering this invitation to explore multiple forms of text through creative engagement, she aims to challenge her students to deepen their educational experiences and to encourage them to seek greater meaning in their faith, their sense of spirituality, and the educational practices they employ. In this article, the author describes one of the most impressive presentations that she has experienced which was created by two students in her Christian Education in the African American Experience course in the spring of 2007. The presentation was titled "The Table: A Narrative Analytic on Theater and African American Christian Education." Because both students had extensive backgrounds in theater, they wanted to explore Christian education in the African-American experience through an "artistic medium." What resulted was an educational experience that centered on the "table" as a metaphor for engaged pedagogy. Christian education through performative art creates a welcoming space for a dynamic interchange between fictional stories, real-life stories, and the truth they each carry. (Contains 7 footnotes.)
