In this article, the author shares how his dissatisfaction with religion textbooks led him to use novels as texts for his religion classes. Among the novels that he used were "To A God Unknown" by John Steinbeck, "The Stranger" by Albert Camus, "A Burnt-Out Case" by Graham Greene, "A Canticle for Leibowitz" by Walter M. Miller, Jr., and "Franny and Zooey" by J. D. Salinger. He shares that these novels raised more questions than answers. Textbooks just do the opposite: give more answers than raise questions. And, the author believes, questions are the heart of the learning process. He also shares how his experience of using narrative works of art, both literature and film, these past forty years with students has helped him understand what is a sacred text and what makes a text sacred.
