Cross/Intercultural Training. A One-Day Seminar in Preparation of Travel Abroad
Sierra, Juan Jose Martinez
Intercultural Education, v19 n3 p283-289 Jun 2008
Globalization is affecting people in ways they are often unaware of. The most visible aspect is perhaps economic, but there are other elements flowing from the dominant cultures (particularly the American) to the rest of the world that influence cultural features via different means (e.g. cinema or television). A further effect of the highly interconnected planet is that people from different origins and cultural backgrounds interact within increasingly diverse societies. Here is where cultural misunderstandings, cultural shock, or communication breakdown can occur. This article presents an example of a one-day seminar that addresses such issues. It is part of a short cross/intercultural course that had been designed for American business students (who had no previous experience in Spain or Europe) prior to their trip to Spain. The seminar is very much focused on travelling to Spain, but can serve as a model elsewhere. (Contains 1 table and 2 notes.)
