The More Students You Reach, the More Students You Teach
Hall, Jon
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v73 n9 p4-8 May 2008
Working with students can be as tiring physically and mentally as any job. In the case of inner-city, disadvantaged youth, this becomes even more of a truism. Some of these students come to school with more baggage that one can even imagine; it's a wonder they can focus on anything, least of all school. In this article, the author shares a few principles that he has tried to follow in his interactions with students. These principles include earning student's respect, making oneself available, and knowing one's students. The author believes that these ideas, when adopted by those in the school community, can certainly create a climate where success is possible for any student population.
