Six Lessons from Jena
Holladay, Jennifer
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v73 n4 p19-20 Dec 2007
The racially charged prosecutions of six black teenagers in Jena, Louisiana, captured the nation's attention, with thousands of protesters descending on the town. The author reminds school professionals that the incident was triggered by nooses hanging from a schoolyard tree and presents six lessons: (1) don't ignore obvious signs of trouble; (2) examine your school's climate; (3) take bias incidents seriously; (4) provide forums for meaningful discussion; (5) use bias incidents as teachable moments; and (6) bridge divisions in the school and the community.
