Constantino, Steven M.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v73 n1 p57-61 Sep 2007
This article discusses the challenges to engaging families in secondary schools, along with practical tips for improving family engagement at the secondary level. Some of these challenges include lack of connection, poor communication, poor attendance, and complex curriculum. The tips and practices that are presented here are just a few of the hundreds of ideas that have been successfully used in secondary schools. The author states that parents and families, regardless of what their backgrounds might happen to be, are the first and best teachers of their children and have a strong intrinsic desire to see their children be successful. To ignore the power of relationships between schools and families is to ensure that the pervasive gaps which exist in student learning will last for yet another generation.
